Introduce yourself and your profession to our readers: I am Sheniqua Johnson, Author, Motivational Speaker, and Empowerment Specialist. I am a Health Coach, Life Coach, and CEO of A Better U, LLC; where I help women strategically live their best lives mentally, physically, and spiritually. I have been entrusted to take care of people’s physical well-being as a Registered Nurse for over 16 years. What I have learned is that in order to achieve the ultimate health one must have a balance of their physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. What that means is if you are well physically but are lacking mentally you will be unbalanced. If you are thriving spiritually yet lacking physically you will be unbalanced. I help women reach that balance. What inspired your interest in this profession? What inspired me to become a Health Coach/Life Coach came from my career as a nurse. I would see clients come into the hospital, I would prepare them for their procedure or administer their medication to get them well again. I would educate them on the things they needed to do to maintain this wellness then send them home. To my disappointment, many of them would return for either the same issue or a new health concern.
I’ve also worked in home care, where I would go into their natural habitats to try to teach and improve their health using their community resources. But most often than not, some clients would revert back to an unhealthy state of being. I began to look deeper into this situation. I was equipping them with the tools they needed to achieve physical wellness but if they reached success it was only temporary. Then I realized it was because I was only strengthening one muscle. I was focused on their physical well-being alone and that was contributing to their imbalance. If you go to the gym and only exercise one leg it is going to cause you to wobble. I wanted to do more to help people who were just like me. I too have had struggles in the various areas of my life, including physical ailments, mental imbalance, and spiritual weakness. I found a secret that helped me get balance in my life and it became my passion to share it with other women. I decided to go into coaching because it allowed me to work with the physical, mental, and spiritual components of an individual. I could now help them reach a state of wholeness. I could help them to stop wobbling, I could help individuals walk confidently to being the best version of themselves. What major challenge did you face in the beginning of your professional journey and how did you overcome it? There have been many challenges for me as a Registered Nurse, as a Health Coach/Life Coach, and even as a business women. The biggest challenge I faced was when I was going through my own life’s struggles. I suffered through depression, low self-esteem, and developed chronic migraines. I lost my motivation to help others and even to live. I was the one who was always there for my friends and family, yet I found myself in need. I had been the motivator for many, but during this time in my life I was the one who needed motivation. I could always see when others were down, did anyone see me in my distress? This is often common for people who are natural born caregivers. Our emotional turmoil gets hidden by our need for helping others. I found myself struggling with the very same issues I was diligently helping others to get through. I too needed help. My faith was being tested, but thankfully during the test my faith was also being stretched. My faith was my saving grace. I grew closer to God during these times and began to live my life the way He ordained it to be. I began walking boldly in my purpose and my life’s calling which is to help people. I had to connect myself with people who could help me. I connected with those who helped me to grow spiritually, mentally, and even physically. When people experience pain in their arm, they would quickly run to the doctor for an x-ray; so why don’t we do the same when we are ailing mentally or even spiritually. We get so caught up in the hurt, we don’t seek the help. I thank God for bringing me to “the help” and now I am better equipped to be the help. What are the top 5 reasons should consider working with a life coach or health coach? The major reason everyone should work with a life coach or health coach is because you are worth it. You are worth getting the help you need to live your best life. You are meant for so much more than where you currently are but you have to realize your value and go after it strategically to get every piece of goodness God has set aside with your name on it. Successful people work with coaches to help keep the momentum going in their lives. We are all worth the extra effort it takes to live life to our fullest potential and a coach keeps us on the right track. If I had to give you the top 5 benefits to working with a health coach/life coach, it would be: -Support system: Coaches have been to the places you wish to grow to. They have achieved some of the things you wish to achieve. They have been there done that, so they can be your voice of reason and your strength during trying times. -Gain clarity: Coaches help you to see your situation clearly. They open doors of possibilities you may not be able to see due to the underlying anguish you may be going through. A health coach/life coach helps you build a workable plan of action. -Empowerment: Health Coaches/Life Coaches are your cheerleaders to success. Your coach may see things inside of you that you have not been able to see. They can motivate and keep you encouraged as you go through the process. There are times when we are working towards a goal and we start to lose steam, we lose the energy needed to accomplish the goals we set. Coaches’ help to keep you fueled with the strength you need to reach your goals. This is why personal trainers are so popular. If you are trying to reach a certain weight, you hire a trainer to talk you out of eating the donuts. It is important that you stay connected with your coach during the process so you successfully reach your goals. -Education: We provide education, instruction, and guidance. We provide the road-map to success. We teach you things that you may not have known. Sure over time you may figure the stuff out but isn’t nice to have someone in your corner to expedite the learning process. -Accountability partner: When you set a goal with a coach, we are going to make sure you get there. We are your partner in success. Nothing makes me prouder than a client who takes the blinders off of their eyes and begins to see their true potential; or someone who confidently begins to walk in their purpose. As a coach, I help you live your best life. Your coach should challenge you and stretch you to your next level in each phase of life.
