What inspired you to become a CEO?
I have always done some small businesses. When I was younger, my brother and I had our own paper route which allowed us to collect our own money. I was also selected to be featured in Essence Magazine as a “Comeback Queen”. So when I was working in Occupational Therapy it occurred to me that they really do not want your ideas. All they wanted was for us to just work and be quiet. So it’s been almost 25 years later, and my husband and I now work on our own ideas in our home care business. Some ideas were successful and some were just flops, but I don’t have to ask for approvals anymore.
What has been your most exciting accomplishment to date?
I love creating events. I have had the joy of creating my own events and helping others create their own events that are profitable. My biggest has been the Success Women’s Conference, but now I have Power Up Summit and Level Up Summit. Both of these summits are growing at a rapid rate and have allowed me to help others share their stories while increasing their visibility. I create stages that allow the upcoming speakers to share the stage with people like Les Brown, Lisa Nichols, Forbes Riley, Dr. George C. Fraser and so many more. That’s what I get excited about.
Any 2 pieces of advice you would share with emerging CEOs?
If I could do it all over again, I would work on becoming more visible on the global platform. Many of us are providing services that the world needs but we lack the exposure needed to propel our businesses forward. Even if your main service is local, you have to create a digital global presence. I often say “stop swimming in the local pond, it’s time to swim in the global ocean.” Secondly, I advise "When one door is closed try the next one, if it's closed go around to the back, if not Create Your OWN, but never give up."
What is next for you in 2021?
I will be launching my new group training for “Create Your Own Profitable Event” for those looking to want to go big in 2022. I will be taking on clients who want to increase their visibility in 2022.
I am wrapping up the “Trailblazers Who Lead II” book anthology with some amazing women while increasing their visibility as well.
I am speaking on at least 4-6 stages in October. My company, KKonnections, is producing Dr. Karen Hills Pruden’s Sister Leaders Conference - www.sisterleadersconference.com (Oct 29-30, 2021). Success Women’s Conference will be held Nov 18-21, 2021 .www.successwomeninternational.com .
