Please introduce yourself?
My name is Jayana Wood. I am a 17-year old student and entrepreneur. The name of my business is Jay’s Henna Designs, a full-service henna body art business offering henna for individuals, parties, weddings and special events. I am currently entering my senior year in high school as a part of the STEM Program at Oxon Hill High School located in Maryland. I am a three-time best-selling author, I am bilingual -- I speak, read and write French, I am world traveller (I have traveled to 5 countries), and the proud big sister of two younger brothers, James and Jalen.
What makes you unique in your industry?
What makes me unique in my industry is that not only am I a self-taught, teenage henna artist, but I am one of few African American henna artists in the industry.
Please share your top 3 most proud accomplishment to date:
To date, my top three proudest accomplishments are: (i) operating my henna business for two years, (ii) having the opportunity to service my first wedding henna client, and (iii) having the opportunity to service my first pregnancy henna client. All of these moments were very special to me because they signified my growth as a business owner, as well as my commitment to servicing my clients in excellence because these clients were referrals, and sticking with my dream as a whole.
Any advice to other women in your industry?
My best advice for women interested in entering the henna industry is to get started. Don’t let the fear of not being good enough stop you from pursuing what you love. There may only be a few African American henna artists in the industry right now, but we are steadily growing and making a space for ourselves and working hard to display our talent.
What is next for you in 2021 and how can readers connect with you online?
My big goal as we close out 2021 is to branch into the Indian circuit to start servicing Indian clientele, specifically the highly lucrative market of Indian weddings.
