Introduce yourself and profession to our readers:
My name is Shelley Meche'tte. I am a Women's Empowerment Speaker, Author, Visionary Strategist, and the Founder of The PowHERful Woman; a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering, inspiring and educating women from all walks of life, encouraging them to not only discover, but actually LIVE their lives...on PURPOSE. I also do some acting on the side. I absolutely love being able to entertain an audience and just recently completed work on an Independent Film.
What inspired you to pursue this area of interest?
I have always enjoyed speaking and teaching others things that I learn. I have always been passionate about women knowing and loving themselves, because I didn't always love ME. But even when I didn't understand how to properly encourage and believe in myself, I still had the capability to believe in someone else.
I want women to understand their worth...how special they are and who they were created to be. We are so much more than "sexual beings". So much more than a pair of thighs...legs...breast. We have value, depth, character, inner-beauty, strength, compassion; so many things that have nothing to do with outer appearance.
It was out of this love for my fellow woman that I became the founder of my current organization, The PowHERful Woman. And from there, it has grown into Speaking engagements, writing a book and showing women how take their visions from "paper...to PURPOSE" as a Visionary Strategist. And I am just getting started!
As for acting...I can not remember a time that I did not love to perform. I have been doing it all of my life, just not on a professional level. Acting for me can be quite therapeutic and I am honored every time I have the chance to entertain.
What advice would you share with those interested in a similar pursuit?
Understand WHY it is that you are doing what you are doing, because if you are all about the money, you will never be a success. When the money isn't there...PASSION has to be what drives you. When the support isn't there...the cries of those who need you has to be your motivation. When frustration sets in and you want to quit, the desire to see your WHY come into fruition has to be what keeps you although the tears are flowing down.
I would also say, check your "circle". You have to have a positive and accountable support system; people who love you, encourage you and who will be honest with you. You need people who will tell you that you are wrong when you're wrong...and who will applaud you in all of the "rights". It can not be people who are afraid of your vision, because they will ultimately stifle you in achievement.
Discuss a professional challenge and how you overcame it:
When I started my Women's Organization...it actually was not my intention. I only wanted to bring women together for an Empowerment Conference and pour life into the possible dead areas of their lives. I had put several events together before, but I never imagined how difficult it would be to put my 1st conference together. I had no money, but needed a venue, speakers, food and everything ELSE that comes along with a conference. And to top it off...had no money for advertising. I began to fret and became extremely frustrated. Not to mention...I have no marketing skills (lol), so that was a challenge as well.
With so many difficulties, and lots of tears, I decided to cancel the event. I didn't want to look foolish. But my "circle" stepped in and began to not only encourage me, but take on some of the responsibility. Due to my lack of finances, Speakers who believed in what I was doing, volunteered their time, my church sponsored the venue and a new friend ended up sponsoring lunch for the day.
The event would have never been a success without all of the assistance of others. My conference was God's idea; HIS plan, so He guided me to everyone I needed. Although He guided...I had to be prepared to receive. I had to do "my part". God took care of the rest!l
What is next for your brand/business in 2017?
Currently my organization is planning a Wine Tasting Networking event this August, where women will come together to learn the history of wine, what the "smell" means and how to actually "taste" it. They will also interact and network with other successful women who may be able to help them reach their next level.
We are also planning our 2018 Conference, which will include an ALL MALE PANEL, where women will have a chance to ask any question they want and take a peek into the mind of a man. A PowHER tour is in the works, empowerment workshops, collaborations, a PowHER T-shirt line and more.
I am currently working on my 2nd book and my clientele for my Visionary Consulting/Strategist Business is growing. For those women who are ready to change their lives by discovering and walking in their designed purpose...I will be the one to grab them by the hand and show them the way. I mean to revolutionize the way women see themselves and continue to show them their PowHER!
I'm also working on a project with my daughter and hope to get back in front of an audience soon to showcase some of these acting chops. Wink...wink. lol
