What inspired you to become a CEO?
Growing up in foster care I never thought I would live to see adulthood. I've endured a lot of hardship but I promised myself that if I made it through, I would work hard to break the cycle, break generational curses, and not be a statistic. I'm determined to be an example for my kids. What has been your most exciting accomplishment to date? Seeing my dream become a reality in product form is a great feeling but being able to inspire others has been my most exciting accomplishment to date. Any 2 pieces of advice you would share with emerging CEOs? When faced with challenges you can see them as an opportunity or stumbling block, the choice is up to you. There is more than one path to success, it's ok to change directions as long as you reach your destination. What is next for you in 2021? My goal is to continue to create and inspire others. I would like to do at least 2 collaborations per year. How can readers connect with you online? Through many trials and tribulations in life, including Shyremia’s addictions, she came out on top thanks to her faith in God and willingness not to give up. Shyremia is still standing and she’s God Best Kept Secret.

My inspiration actually derived from a lack of diversity and inclusion for plus size men and women. As a woman who has suffered with weight issues, I often found myself struggling to find trendy attire for curvy women in my city. After countless trips to local boutiques I grew increasingly frustrated only to find the selection of plus size and extended plus size clothing was simply an overlooked factor in a lot of cases. After months of due diligence and research, I soon realized many women and men shared my same agonizing pain. In 2015, after many months of prayer, preparation and planning, The Classic Maven Boutique was launched online. In 2016 we opened our first Brick and Mortar location What inspired you to become a CEO?
When I was a little girl I was bounced around a lot. I moved from place to place never really set any roots until I was blessed with my bonus mother Susie Morgan. She was my inspiration to become a CEO. Being with her she taught me how value and evaluate my strength, and how to "own my own". After many years in the healthcare industry I decided to activate my strength and power by becoming an educator the healthcare field, assisting career development and owning my own Clinical Medical Laboratory Service. In 2005 I decided to take a further Leaf of faith as CEO in the male-dominated industry of Logistics. As the CEO of Freight Karma I have become a Trailblazer and cannot wait to see the manifestation of my hard work of 2021. "Let's Move Some Freight" LOL What inspired you to become a CEO?

My inspiration to become my own boss came from my upbringing of my family being entrepreneurs and community servants. I begun as early as 8 years old washing hair in my cousin’s salon and volunteering in the community. The ability to be able to have the freedom of not being afraid to make a mistake was a seed planted in me to be fearless also allowed me to see the vulnerability of being compassionate and loving towards others. I knew by 19 years old I would serve in the nonprofit sector in some fashion. What inspired you to become a CEO?
I was a homeless pregnant mother who lost everything and had to took a leap of faith to become a CEO to get everything back. I have been in the US Army for over 19 years and during one of my 4 deployments to Iraq one of my soldiers suggested that I become a spin instructor to pass time. In the moment I learned on the go, and from that many people started to fill the room elated with the results they were getting from class and said I should become a personal trainer. Well I did and upon returning from Iraq I interned at Golds Gym Arboretum in Richmond, VA. I was later mentored to go and create my own business due to the amount of knowledge I had developed thru experience and education. Knowing I had no other options, wasn’t really making a lot of money I started Uncovering The New U, LLC with $5.00 and hope. What inspired you to become a CEO?
Well, both of my parents were CEO’s... Entrepreneurship kind of runs in my veins. I always say when I was in high school, I was on the computer looking up wholesale products to sale while other teenagers were at games and parties. It’s something I have always been passionate about. Tell us a bit about yourself and purpose journey:
I am an author, ghostwriter, and publisher. My purpose is to share other people’s stories through writing. My purpose was birth through the tragic loss of my husband. I turned my pain into a profit and purpose. Tell us a bit about yourself and purpose journey:
I am a best selling Author, Speaker, and Podcast Host. I am just a regular girl who decided to use my gifts to unlock my purpose. I was the teen mom that everyone wrote off and said would never recover from the toll that having a baby at 16 could have on your life. I dusted myself off, married my daughters father, and decided that I would flip the unfavorable statistic to a favorable one. I worked hard and became a Nurse, but knew I was destined to be more because my desire to seriously write never left my mind. Finally, I started writing my book Little Girl, Little Girl, Don't Get Lost in This World. It was initially a book for my daughter because I knew that if I- the smart girl on the road to Harvard - could end up pregnant and dropping out of school, anyone could. It was supposed to be a guide for my daughter- full of honest advice, wisdom and tips to keep her on the right track. When I finished it, I realized how many other girls needed it and I published it. The response was so overwhelming, it changed everything. From that book, I built my nonprofit Venney Girl Inc. aimed at helping at risk young women overcome, and an awesome speaking career. Little did I know I was just getting started... Tell us a bit about yourself and purpose journey:

What has been the biggest business lesson for you in 2020?
Follow your gut! I started the Hustle + Motivate Box in the middle of COVID. I was told not to start or sell anything during this time because it was a pandemic and no one was going to buy from me. This person also told me that I should wait until next year or when everything goes back to normal. My first month I made more than I did with my last business It is exceptional when you see a woman making boss moves, closing deals, and opening new doors in the midst of the pandemic….And that woman is none other than international celebrity hairstylist, Nafisah Carter. As a leading industry hair veteran with well over 10 years under her belt, Nafisah Carter is a force to be reckoned with. Having slayed the manes’ of some of the industries finest such as Michelle Williams, Debbie Allen, and Tinashe, Nafisah has proven herself to be an unformidable force in the beauty industry. Nafisah has come full force even during the pandemic, with the re-emergence of her new salon and brand image, The Salon Raleigh by Nafisah Carter! Formerly known as Nafisah’s Beauty Boutique, The Salon Raleigh is located in Raleigh, North Carolina‘s Capital City. It is the premier place where beauty, glam and privacy meet luxury. Glambitious had a chance to catch up with the beautiful and resilient, Nafisah Carter, for an exclusive interview to discuss everything from her most memorable career experience, to how she stepped out on faith and leveled up her brand.

I have always been a boss & an entrepreneur. At the age of 9, I started a babysitting business and the rest was history. Now as a wife & mother of 6, I own a thriving empire, that includes companies in the transportation industry, real estate, coaching, and direct marketing industries. Being a boss, especially a lady boss, is not all roses. My journey has been riddled with failures and ugliness. Loss of friends & family, etc. but I wouldn't trade this ride for the world. The rewards greatly outnumber the sacrifices if you stay the course. |
