1. Introduce yourself and profession to our readers:
My name is Shay Williams Smith of styleisministry.com, I’m a christian style influencer that specializes in ministering through style. Who says being a christian has to be boring? Style is Ministry is a lifestyle. It is you getting up everyday and presenting the best of ourselves to God through your own style. We should always be putting an effort into whatever we wear. Why?...Because our clothing is one of the ways we communicate with others.
2. What inspired you to pursue this area of interest?
Being someone who hasn’t grown up in the church, when you first become a believer, everything shifts. Every action, every decision, every milestone, has a greater elevation of purpose. When I started in the industry years ago, I simply just wanted to be in fashion. However, along the way, my higher calling to harness my purpose continued to echo in my ear. I needed, no -- desired, to divinely align my God given talents with my purpose.
It wasn’t until I became clear about what my life’s purpose was, that I was able to silence those hair-raising questions.
My purpose is to INSPIRE. My purpose is to EDUCATE. My purpose is to WORSHIP. All while dressing the part for his glory. And that is how Style is Ministry was developed; it is a divine intersection of my faith, my story, my trials and my triumphs. It is my way of showing how your wardrobe is apart of ministry as well.
3. What advice would you share with those interested in a similar pursuit?
The best advice I can offer is to follow your God given purpose. Your ministry/ brand is not for everyone and that’s okay. Don’t seek approval from people.
4. Discuss a professional challenge and how you overcame it:
I have been through a lot of challenging things in life/ my profession but the one most challenging thing is learning how to balance work, and family life. It takes a lot of discipline, sacrifice time, and energy. I always keep in mind that my husband and children are my first ministry before anything else.
5. What is next for your brand/business in 2017?
I plan to expand my brand into a lot more education thorough eBooks and my podcast. I am very focused on the younger generation coming up, teaching how their style is ministry as well. I love to educate people on how to build, develop their church wardrobe, and along with their personal style. I believe that everyone’s style is ministry.
