Introduce yourself and profession to our readers:
I am Necia Boston, owner of BAABS Boutique & Beauty Bar where we offer full waxing services, facials, lash services, and a full skin care and cosmetic line for women with sensitive skin. I am also a licensed Esthetician and MUA. What inspired you to pursue this area of interest? The idea for the name came from one of my favorite movies as a child, BAPS. The concept of the Beauty Bar and the cosmetic line emerged from my personal struggle with super sensitive skin along with topical and food allergies. I found myself not only struggling with allergic reactions to certain products, but also everyday household items my makeup clients would have in their houses such as soy candles and pin sol. It was in the best interest of my health to open a "safe place" for myself to conduct services as well as offer a product line that is geared towards sensitive skin. What advice would you share with those interested in a similar pursuit? My advice for young black women starting their own entrepreneurship journey would be to never fear the evolution of their vision. BAABS started out as a makeup service business. In the beginning there was no makeup line, no brick and mortar location, no waxing services in mind, no classes being offered. I didn't want to offer different services other than makeup; I didn't want to teach others makeup, but the BAABS brand grew into itself. I was hesitant with deviating from my original plan (which was to just paint faces), but am now appreciative of the diversification of the business. Eventually the direction of our business may change, and that's okay. Discuss a professional challenge and how you overcame it: One of my professional challenges is networking. I am not a social butterfly and tend to be shy when it comes to meeting new people. In order to overcome this necessary task in business, I found myself focusing on interacting and talking about what I love and what is important to me. Talking about my passion for healthy skin and educating women on beauty help ease the nervousness of interacting with new people. What is next for your brand/business in 2016? The last three months of 2016 we will be focusing on our holiday collections and planning some great new product launches for 2017. In the next five years, we hope to have several other BAABS locations and possibly be retailed at other high end beauty locations. How can readers connect with you online and through social media?
