Introduce yourself to our readers and tell us about your professional journey? Hello, I am a woman of ambition and perseverance. You really just never know what’s next to pop out of my hat. A true model of excellence and black girl magic, growing up in a small town on the eastern shore of Maryland (Cambridge) didn’t limit my visions or my steps. By early adulthood, I packed up my life to move to Baltimore, MD. There I obtained my bachelor degree in nursing from Coppin State University. A few years later, I began to feel confined and started looking for overall wellness. I realized that nursing degree wasn’t all life had to offer. So I used it as my ticket out of Baltimore as a travel nurse. First stop was Atlanta and that was my season of discovery. I was discovering my God sent talents without even looking for them. One of my good girlfriends in Atlanta had a business and me just being a friend would offer my creative advice and skills. One day she said to me “You know you’re an awesome publicist and I’m going to hire you.” I laughed it off, but later God revealed to me that she was right. I started my first brand, MeMe House of PR (a freelance lifestyle PR firm). It brought me so much success and allowed me to see God will place you where he wants you and he will give you the skills to be great. What inspired you to create an empowerment brand that aligns with your nursing profession? I was my inspiration! The moment (MeMe House of PR) was my inspiration to impact my nursing peers, and I seen it work (entrepreneurship). At the time I knew so many nurses who were broken in their career, broken in their finances and broken-hearted. I wanted them to get back to their passions/ dreams/ happiness and understand that they can get paid to do what they love. That’s when I started the empowerment network Chicks with Cheques (CWC). This network was built for every working woman that need to step outside the box of “work, sleep, overtime, repeat.” I was learning that most working women didn’t make time for their passions because they were tricked into believing they can’t get paid for it. They associated passions with unpaid. The name Chicks with Cheques was picked because working women are just that and that’s not enough to be fulfilled in life.
How do you balance work and entrepreneurship? Some days I want to pull my hair out!! Ugh it’s just not easy, but that’s life! It requires a monthly, weekly & daily routine. I stage my life in those parts to break down the days I’m a nurse and days I’m a boss. Truthfully entrepreneurship is 24/7 for me but the tricky part is the nursing schedule. I deliver babies and some days it’s very slow so I might have my iPad for virtual tasks. I only work as nurse 3- 4 days a week and for only 9 months out of the year. So that’s 3 months of uninterrupted building time. I stay faithful to God’s words and his promises. It restores my drive on the days I feel like giving up. What advice would you share with women that want create a brand around their career as well? Go to work!!! So many people associate entrepreneurship with freedom and creativity. But it also requires an audience (customers) and funding. Your career peers is your audience and will help your tribe reach a national platform through word of mouth and purchases. Going to work is banking hours for your brand! What is next for you and your brand in 2018? In the last quarter of 2017 we started our digital products collection to help CWC with branding an online business. That will be a huge part of CWC in 2018. Also we are birthing our 1st girls trip to the Bahamas on March 9, 2018. We are excited to have over 50 women joining us for business workshops, networking and fun. Plus just for my nurses, we are headed to Miami for Nurses Week in May and New Orleans for Essence festival with our 2nd annual Nurse Power Brunch! How can readers connect with you online? Glambitious readers can connect with me in Chicks with Cheques virtual community at: IG@iamnursememe @ChickswithCheques Or at www.chickswithcheques.net Facebook
