Introduce yourself and profession to our readers:
Hey readers! I am Janae Waters, the Founder of KrownRoyalz™ Clothing Company, a luxury unisex apparel line that uses fashion to inspire change, promote self-love, and encourage liberation.
What inspired you to pursue this area of interest?
I decided to pursue a business in the Fashion Industry because I believe it was one of many pathways to fulfilling my purpose. They say that if you mix that which you're good at with that which you’re passionate about, you'll find your purpose. Well I've always been really into fashion— or style rather, and I'm super passionate about giving back, so I created KrownRoyalz™ Clothing Company as a way to be able to do both simultaneously.
While the clothes themselves will empower those who choose to support and wear them, the proceeds from the clothes will also be used to empower and rebuild inner-city urban areas across America through various community service projects. Just consider us the first self-funded fundraiser and know that you won’t only hear our names mentioned as it relates to the latest threads. We are deeply rooted in the community as well!
What advice would you share with those interested in a similar pursuit?
Honestly, the biggest thing I've learned thus far while building my business is to take my time no matter what's happening around me—so that's the advice I'd give. If longevity is your goal, then take your time. Nothing great happens overnight. Don't worry about what's happening around you. Keep a tunnel vision and stay in your own lane, but don't try to speed through that tunnel or lane just because you're the only one there. Otherwise you run the risk of crashing and burning [out] and you'd only have your lack of patience to blame.
Discuss a professional challenge and how you overcame it:
I believe that the greatest professional challenge I faced in the infancy of building my business was gaining the capital to properly execute the vision that I have for the business. There’s a quote floating around the Internet that says, “God doesn’t give you a vision that matches your budget, he gives you one that matches your faith,” or something like that. And it’s so true. I don’t have a “cheap” vision, so I had to constantly make sure my budget allowed me to live up to my own expectations. And honestly, although it’s not much of a challenge these days, it does still present itself occasionally. I overcame it and I continue to overcome it by making the best of what I have at the moment while researching and searching for ways to obtain the capital. For instance, when I first started my business my only source of income was that of a Substitute Teacher. And to put that into perspective, we get paid a flat rate fee solely based on the amount of days we work within a pay period. Before pursuing Entrepreneurship, I was perfectly okay with that job. It paid my bills and allowed me the freedom I desired at the time.
However, once my business endeavors began, I realized that I needed more money. So not only did I go back into the workforce making salary to help fund my business, I started to scale back on other expenses or "luxuries" too. I started selling clothes of my own that I had not worn for months at a time, and that was more money coming in, all to fund my business. Now I've gotten to the point where I can kind of pay for things as ideas, projects, and even errors arise. I also pay experts to teach me how to make my money make more money, so I no longer have to worry about compromising on my visions or trying to raise funds last minute to get things done.
What is next for your brand/business in 2018?
This year we're just going to continue working Exposure and getting ourselves out there to the public. We're coming up on our second year as an Entity, and statistics state that small businesses usually fail within the first two years for various reasons. So we are lucky –no blessed– to say that we've built ourselves up enough to not fall to the wayside. That being said, this year we just plan to go much harder than the years before, because this is only the beginning! We want the world to know who we are and what we do, so the mission is to make that happen! Our exposure will grow and so will our numbers.
