Introduce yourself and profession to our readers: My name is Alexcina Brown. I’m the creator, and editor-in-chief of BRASH! Magazine. A bi-monthly digital publication highlighting independent music artists, visual artists, and fashion elements. What inspired your pursuits?
I’ve always loved writing and creating. I even landed a corporate job where I wrote blogs and other content for their websites. In doing so, I became bored with writing about subject matters that didn’t interest me. So I decided to create my own platform within the entertainment industry to not only continue to do what I love, but to support/help talented music artists who are often overlooked because they aren’t heavily promoted within the mainstream media. It started off as a blog where I’d post marketing tips for new/indie artists then I decided to expand it to the magazine format to continue my mission of support in the indie music industry. Also, I wanted to be in a position where I can provide opportunities for young entertainment writers to gain experience to add to their resumes just as I was given when I interned for blogs and entertainment companies. What advice would you have for those interested in a similar pursuit? RESEARCH & READ. You can’t always rely on others to put you onto knowledge and connections, so it’s best to make that step on your own. I’ve gain a lot of knowledge just by simply using my good friend “Google”, as well as reviewing other publications to see how they market themselves, engage with readers, what type of content is popular, and even how to create a magazine layout. Starting something from the ground up can be terrifying and overwhelming but utilizing your downtime throughout your day in this way helps the process. What is next for your business/brand in 2016? I’m gearing up for the next issue coming out Sept. 21st. I’m also looking to do more for professionals within the independent fashion industry by attending their shows, providing more features. I’ll be in attendance at a few shows for NYFW scoping out talent within the fashion industry to feature, highlight, and network. In addition I’m working to get the magazine within a print format as well as creating merchandise for 2017. How can readers connect with you online and through social media.
